Kelmscott House

Listed Buildings & Heritage

Kelmscott House is a Grade II* listed Georgian mansion on the Upper Mall in Hammersmith, overlooking the River Thames.

Once the London home of artist, writer, and designer William Morris, the property carries exceptional cultural and architectural significance.

Mullery Architects was appointed by an existing client to deliver a sensitive renovation of the main residence while addressing the unique complexities of a building that partially operates as a public museum.

The brief was multifaceted. Alongside modernising the living spaces for a growing family, we were tasked with creating a clear division between the private residential areas on the upper floors and the museum at ground-floor level.

This required the removal of a connecting staircase and the introduction of discreet acoustic and fire upgrades to ensure safety, privacy, and compliance with heritage standards.

Internally, the proposal involved a full renovation of the main residence, including new kitchen and utility areas, upgraded bathroom suites, and bespoke fitted furniture crafted to complement the building’s historic character.

We also secured planning permission for an extension to the existing garden room, providing space for a new home office, gym, and outdoor entertaining areas.

Working closely with the local conservation team throughout, every intervention was carefully considered to protect the building’s historic fabric while meeting the needs of modern family life.

The completed works honour the heritage of Kelmscott House while subtly enhancing comfort, privacy, and functionality for contemporary living.

The redefined separation between the family home and public museum preserves the integrity of both spaces, while the upgraded interiors blend craftsmanship, sensitivity, and quiet modernity.

A new garden room extension extends the home’s daily usability, offering dedicated spaces for work, wellness, and socialising.

The result is a thoughtful renewal of a landmark property — one that respects its storied past while supporting the rhythm of modern life.
